About the Project

We have successfully received planning consent for a Green Hydrogen Electrolyser (GHE) production and storage facility at Kimberly-Clark's Northfleet manufacturing facility in Gravesend, Kent.

The scheme uses electrolysers which will use electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar to split water and create green hydrogen.

The facility will incorporate a water treatment plant and electrical equipment to supply the electrolyser and will include storage tanks to pressurise and store the green hydrogen. The gas is then fed into the industrial boiler through a new hydrogen pipeline.

The manufacturing facility will use the green hydrogen produced, to fuel a new dual-fuelled boiler system, located inside the mill. This new boiler system can operate using hydrogen or natural gas to produce the steam and heat necessary for the paper manufacturing process at the mill and will replace the current boiler which solely uses natural gas. This will help to decarbonise manufacturing of much-loved household products like Andrex®, reducing emissions and boosting energy security.

We have created the above 3-D images to illustrate how the project might look upon completion and to show how it would fit into the existing industrial setting at that point on the Thames.
